In an effort to promote youth development, University-YMCA (Uni-Y) service clubs have been established in the U.S, Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and other countries to mobilise, empower and involve young people to be actively engaged in serving the community. Locally, with YMCA of Singapore’s interest in engaging and developing youth, grooming young people to be civic conscious and socially responsible and to have a passion to serve the community, Uni-Y was set up as a platform for youth engagement. In August 2005, the first Uni-Y club was established in Singapore Management University (SMU). With a passionate, committed pioneering leadership team, Uni-Y has since grown from glory to glory, strength to strength, building servant leaders who make an impact in both the local and international communities. In August 2007, Uni-Y was subsequently formed in National University of Singapore (NUS), followed by the third in Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
Naturally, the Uni-Y programmes were modelled after its parent organization– the YMCA of Singapore. One of the key components was Community Service Programmes, where Uni-Y members and volunteers are sent into the local and international communities to make a positive impact in the lives of the less privileged. Secondly, YMCA being an international and global organisation allowed Uni-Y members and volunteers the many opportunities to connect to the YMCA movements worldwide through international and regional conferences. Lastly, wanting to teach Uni-Y members and volunteers’ social entrepreneurship, another key component of Uni-Y was Social Enterprises, with a vision for them to be leaders in the corporate world who continues to contribute to serving the community.
